Planning a dog friendly Scarborough break? The Yorkshire coast is made for walks with a four-legged companion: sandy bays, a castle headland and miles of clifftop paths. The less obvious part is the beach rules, which change with the season. This guide covers where your dog can run, which walks to try, and what to know before you book a stay at Norbreck Hotel, a dog friendly hotel on Castle Road with views over both bays.
Scarborough’s two main beaches, North Bay and South Bay, have a seasonal dog restriction. From 1 May to 30 September, dogs are not permitted in the signposted zones of both beaches, and those zones are marked at the beach access points. Outside those dates the restriction doesn’t apply, so autumn, winter and early spring are a good time to visit with a dog.
Away from the main bathing areas, parts of the beaches stay open to dogs all year round. Check the tide times before you set out so you can get back safely, and keep your dog on a lead wherever signs ask you to. Because North Yorkshire Council sets the exact zones and penalties and they can change, read the council’s dog control order guidance before you travel.
If you’re visiting in summer, head to Cayton Bay, a short drive south of the town. It’s widely listed as welcoming dogs all year, though it’s still worth looking for signs on the day.

Scarborough Castle is a stone’s throw from the hotel, and dogs on leads are welcome in the castle grounds. The headland gives you open space and sea views on both sides, which makes it a good place for a proper walk before breakfast or dinner. Check English Heritage for current rules and opening times.
For an easy-going outing, walk north along the North Bay promenade, past the rows of colourful beach huts towards Scalby Mills. It’s a classic seafront stroll, and you’ll meet plenty of other dog walkers on the way.
The Cleveland Way National Trail passes through Scarborough. From Scalby Mills, the path climbs onto the cliffs and follows the coast towards Hayburn Wyke, roughly four miles one way. It suits dogs that enjoy a long walk. The path climbs steeply at the start, so keep your dog on a lead near cliff edges and any livestock. There is a pay-and-display car park at Scalby Mills if you’d rather drive to the start.
For a dog friendly Scarborough stay, Norbreck Hotel is a short walk from the castle headland and the seafront. We welcome well-behaved dogs of all sizes in selected rooms at £10 per night. Let us know when you book that you’re bringing your dog, so we can have your room ready.
