If you’re planning golf in Scarborough, Scarborough South Cliff Golf Club deserves a place on your list. It’s an 18-hole, par 72 course on the Yorkshire coast, with sea views, a famous architect behind its design and a proper test for golfers of every level. When your round is done, Norbreck Hotel, about [2.5–3 miles] away, is a comfortable place to stay, eat and unwind.
Whether you’re planning a weekend away with friends or a single round on a coastal break, here are five reasons this course earns its reputation.
Dr Alister MacKenzie, the architect behind Augusta National, was involved in the course here, and the club still follows his design ideas today. Founded in 1903, it was redesigned in the early 1920s after the First World War.
The course is split by the main road between Scarborough and Filey. On one side you play inland, on parkland holes that reward accurate tee shots. On the other you play the cliff-top holes, with open views over South Bay and along the coastline.
South Cliff regularly hosts regional, county and national events and was joint host of the English Amateur Championship in 2016. For a visiting golfer, that’s a good sign of the quality of the course and how well it’s looked after.
At around 6,400 yards from the back tees, it’s a course that asks for accuracy, especially when the wind comes in off the sea. Pack a windproof layer, and check the club’s dress code before you arrive.
South Cliff is on Deepdale Avenue, off Filey Road, while Norbreck Hotel is on Castle Road, about [2.5–3 miles] away, so it’s an easy drive or taxi ride between the two. Browse our rooms and check our current offers to build a comfortable stay around your round.

After 18 holes, you’ll be looking for dinner. Our restaurant and bar serves fresh, locally sourced dishes, cocktails and wine, and it welcomes visiting diners as well as hotel guests. If you’re still deciding where to eat in Scarborough, our guide has more ideas around town.
